SAT tutoring featured in Westchester Magazine

Westchester Magazine interviewed Laura Wilson about her very successful tutoring service known as WilsonDailyPrep.  When asked for one of her best tricks, Laura mentioned the bathroom vocabulary.  Laura Wilson makes unannounced house visits to check that students are keeping a pile of vocabulary words in their bathroom for 5-minute study sessions.  She reports that approximately 80% of her students have followed through on this trick.

SAT Tips Now On Video

SAT tips and ACT tips that you are learning from this blog and beyond are now posted as videos.  Laura Wilson will explain in her own words each tip and why it is so important to follow.

Serious Practice for Serious Students:

WilsonPrep’s Recommendations for Supplemental Study Materials

Practicing for any big event is crucial for success. When practicing for a trombone recital, you practice on the trombone, not the piccolo. When practicing for a track meet, you practice sprinting and hurdles, not back flips off a diving board. Practice only makes perfect if it’s the perfect practice! Therefore, when practicing for the SAT or ACT, you need to practice real questions from real tests.

I recommend that all of my students looking for extra study materials visit their high school guidance offices. The guidance office should have available both a free ACT and SAT sent to them by the test makers themselves. If one test isn’t enough (and it never is!), I recommend the following books:

For the SAT:

WilsonDailyPrep Exclusive Math and Verbal Workbooks

With over 500 questions each, WilsonDailyPrep math and verbal workbooks provide the comprehensive practice you need to push yourself and your SAT scores to the next level. The books are divided into question-specific sections so that you can practice and perfect each SAT strategy. Buy now at WilsonDailyPrep.com!

The Official SAT Study Guide

Brought to you by College Board, The Official SAT Study Guide is a giant, bright blue book that not only details the test, but also contains 8 real SATs. Answer keys and score charts are provided, but detailed solutions are not. Students should be sure to look over the questions they missed and realize why their answer is incorrect. By applying the tips and strategies that the WilsonDailyPrep has introduced and reinforced daily, students will engage in deliberate practice when practicing questions and reviewing mistakes. Beginning this spring, the WilsonDailyPrep will host live chats that specifically reference the tests in this book.

The Official SAT On-line Course: www.CollegeBoard.com This online program provides students with an SAT question a day, as well 6 additional tests as well as worksheets. The online course is very similar to the Official Study Guide but it provides plenty of extra materials.

For the ACT:

The Real ACT Prep Guide.

A big red book made available by ACT.org, The Real ACT Prep Guide is available at any bookstore, or online. The book details each of the four sections of the ACT, and includes practice questions throughout the various chapters. At the back of the book are three actual ACTs, answer keys, detailed solutions and score conversion charts.

Test My Brain

Test My Brain is a cool website that provides information about your own brain while providing important research data to psychologists.  This site has games of all sorts that result in feedback about your memory and other brain functions.  Test My Brain aims to give worthwhile content to users to continue gaining more individuals for their research.   The experiments, or games, are approximately 15 minutes long and covers everything from estimating numbers to recognizing faces.  Try it!

Knowing how your brain works is interesting to psychologists but it is also information that can help you prepare better for the SAT test.  If you know your test taking style you can improve it.

The Eyeballing Game

Video games are addictive for both kids and adults and The Eyeballing Game is no exception.  This game tests your ability to see and make shapes, lines, and angles by allowing three tries at seven geometric tasks.  An Ontario carpenter launched They Eyeballing Game in September 2009.  Be careful- it is very addictive!

Games are a fun way to stimulate your brain.  Change games often to be sure your brain function is always improving.  These activities can even help you prepare for the SAT exam by training your brain to focus on one question at a time and staying focused for longer periods of time. SAT Prep Classes

There are many types of SAT prep classes that help students become familiar with the SAT.  There are individual, group, and online prep programs with different benefits.  Make sure you decide which type of SAT preparation is most effective for you.

Benefits of each:
Individual tutoring offers the most personalized attention.   Student and tutor can review specific strengths and weaknesses, and sessions are completely tailored to individual student needs.   Also, a private tutor can ensure practice and the completion of homework.   However, private tutoring can be extremely expensive and requires a large time commitment.

Small group tutoring is often grouped according to ability and allows for some  personalized instruction.  Lessons are often geared toward the group’s abilities as a whole. Small groups also generate peer motivation.  However, small group tutoring can be nearly as expensive as private tutoring.

Large group tutoring presents the necessary tips and strategies to a classroom of students.  Large group tutoring provides instruction at a lower cost than individual and small group tutoring.   However, individual attention will not be offered.   Effective large group tutoring assigns weekly homework and promotes skills by offering timed exams.  Students who are highly motivated and need minimal guidance often do best in these large group situations.

Online tutoring is another affordable option that provides the flexibility and convenience necessary for today’s teen schedules.   Many students combine online tutoring with group, private, or small group instruction, enhancing the SAT prep process. SAT success revolves around practice and online tutoring provides this practice at a reasonable price point.   The problem with online tutoring is accountability.  Students often do not “choose” to practice for the SAT.  WilsonDailyPrep, an innovative and award-winning online prep program, provides the benefits of private tutoring with the convenience of online practice.  Students receive daily SAT questions and are assigned to a personal coach who holds them accountable for their work.  Visit www.wilsonprep.com for more program details.

SAT subject test dates

mexicaligrl asked:

If I take SAT tests on January 23, and the deadline to turn it into the school is on Feb-01,
would I have time to take them or would it be too late?

October SAT

Charger 3 asked:
Is the October SAT harder than the SATs from all the other test dates?

I was planning on taking the SAT this comming October, but one of my friends told me that the October one is the hardest.

She said it is because students have time to prep for it during the summer. So for the people who have taken the October SAT and SATs on other test dates, is the one on October really harder?
Is it the same way for the Subject Tests? Because I am going to take the Subject Tests if the Reasoning Test is harder in October.
